I just watched the pilot of TNT’s Raising the Bar on the TNT website. I didn’t get to see it during air time because of the power outage during Gustav. The show stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar from Saved by the Bell, which I admit I’ve watched now and then. I was hopeful that the show would knock my socks off given that it is a Steven Bochco show. I have always been intrigued about Stonehenge and other Neolithic sites like Newgrange, which we saw when we went to Ireland over spring break this year. When we went to England for the Labour Process Conference one year, we visited Stonehenge and the stone circle at Avebury on the “stones and bones” tour hosted by Astral Travel. (Astral Travel has, unfortunately, gone out of business; they were a great tour company.) Gustav was a harrowing and stressful experience, but we are really blessed and lucky that nothing major happened to us. We had some minor roof damage, we lost our electricity, we were inconvenienced. We have no right to complain. We have (had) a tree about three feet from the front corner of our house. We’ve been arguing for ages about taking it down. I didn’t want to take it down, because I love it, and because its roots are holding up the house in that corner (at least according to an engineering report that we had done when we thought we were having foundation problems).Read More →

Finally! Something I’m not too behind the curve on! Apparently a McCain aide, Michael Goldfarb, made a disparaging remark about us Pro-Obama D&D players on McCain’s blog. (IMO most D&D players are Libertarians, but that’s just anecdotal.) The viral video of Christian the Lion made me sniffle and almost cry. It is about a lion cub who was domesticated and then re-released in the wild. The story reminded me of Born Free, a movie from the 1960s (and it’s quintessential 60s, too). It turns out that the guy who “Born Free” was about helped re-release Christian to the wild. The viral video is a touching reunion between Christian and his caretakers.
