Alien Monkey Cat and Broom

Let me introduce you to this cat. Her name is Monkey, which is short for Alien Monkey Cat. Some people call her AMC for short, but only on Facebook. She is visiting from another planet and she is residing with me for a while while she spies on us. I have shared her mission notes on Facebook, but now that I’m blogging again, I can use this as an opportunity to spread the word widely and perhaps save the planet from takeover by her species. Be forewarned. They have dripping, venomous spikes in their tails.

Email signatures

Lately I’ve been getting a lot of email with a certain type of signature file that cracks me up. Usually the emails are from people in corporate offices, but some people at school have them too. They are wordy, legalistic disclaimers about privacy and liability. They are often difficult to understand and they sound full of it. I know the people who have these signatures attached to their emails usually have no control over their presence. In some cases, though, that’s not the truth.

So I’m taking revenge. I have written my own signature file and here it is:

Bizarre Twist on Nigerian Scam

I don’t really know why I’m so fascinated by Nigerian Scams. But I am. I got a bizarre one today. I’m sure it’s been around for a while, but this is the first time I’ve received one like it. It’s the moneygram scam.

John Atkins emailed me (from a gmail account) telling me he’s sending me part of my money via moneygram. He gave me the reference code and the answer to the secret question. (I will share it with you so you have it too. It’s “green.”) Then the email says you can’t contact him at his email account, but if you have questions, write to this AOL account.

This is a very bizarre twist. I mean, do people really fall for this? Yep. For instance, some county treasurer in Michigan actually embezzled money from the county because he fell victim to one of the scams. How stupid [...]

Link-o-mania – A Geektastic Handful

I cleaned up my bookmarks today. I had too many to keep track of. Mostly they were things I wanted to blog about but never got around to. I had a handful of links that I don’t want cluttering my bookmarks, but that I didn’t want to delete. Mostly cute stuff. So here’s some miscellaneous links:

1. Marc Bousquet’s syllabus for Internet Culture and Information Society. I don’t think I could teach the cyberculture class again. I’m so out of it. I refuse to give up my text-based muds in favor of MMORPGs. I don’t particularly like the social networking. At least I blog (occasionally). Bousquet’s syllabus has them view the Daily Show’s report on Second Life. It’s worth a laugh.
