Fonts and Fontburner for WordPress

October 7, 2009 update: I returned to FLIR. I didn’t notice much of a different in pageload time and I there’s only one or two fonts available from Fontburner that I actually like. So, yay, it’s back to Freehand 471 for me!

Today I changed fonts. I went from Freehand 471, which I really like, to a font called Inkydinky. Silly name, but then most fonts have silly names. I changed because I was playing around with Fontburner and it seemed quicker and less taxing than FLIR, which is what I was previously using. I didn’t like the way that FLIR loaded up the headings’ default font and then switched over to the fancy font. I thought the pages looked sort of blinky. Fontburner stores the fonts for your WordPress site on their server. Unfortunately, Fontburner’s server appears to be slow and their font choices [...]

Better blogging

In preparing for revamping Vox and She-blog, I read a lot about blogging and what I should do to improve my blog and site. I’ve learned a lot and hopefully my future blogging will reflect that. There are some obvious problems with my old site and my old blog on blogspot – I’ve just never really bothered with them. The coding and design on them suck. I never took the time to deal with validation, cross-browser, or monitor size issues. When blogger went to the new blog format, I could never get my site to look right and I didn’t want to learn how because it was so annoyingly complicated. Whatever. It’s a new era.

In addition to these obvious mistakes, I learned about some other blogging conventions that I violate. It’s funny that there are now “rules” about how to blog and what makes a good blog. [...]

Momentous Blogging Occasion

Writing is difficult for me. This is my 401st blog entry. Made possibly only because I spent an afternoon transferring old blog entries from my archives and journals. But this is still a big deal for me. I have never been good at journaling. I’ve always wanted to be good at it, but it’s never worked out for me. I love to buy journals to write in. I have many beautiful, elegant, -empty- journal books. I also have a stack of journal books with maybe only five or six entries in them.

The most successful journaling I did was when I was trying to work through my writing block. I read a book, The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, about dealing with creative blocks. Like most self-help books, this book comes with a whole array of accompanying workbooks, inspirational CDs, blah blah blah. But, the book came highly recommended, [...]

I have been neck deep in Dreamweaver and learning CSS. Well, not really learning as much as hacking the template I found. I have something of a template put together. I’m not done with it and I think Willow probably needs to take a look at it to straighten some of it out. One thing that really helped me was installing this great Foxfire plug-in called Firebug, which lets you examine the source code of a website with greater ease and detail than the generic “view page source” button. I’m rather proud of what I’ve accomplished so far, though. I’m having some trepidation about converting the style sheet to fit blogger, though.

I have decided to buy Willow her own domain so that she can use that instead of using a subdomain of Voxygen. I didn’t know I could do that, but apparently I can! I get to have [...]
