A day of lessons in stereotypes

Today has been an interesting lesson in stereotypes.

Lesson one:

I had a guest speaker from Deaf Services in BR come to my Interpersonal Communication class. He was dynamic and interesting and the students loved him. Before his visit, I decided to learn a little more about Deaf culture the capital D is important to people in the Deaf community). I’ve been fascinated about it ever since a friend of mine demonstrated the way that sign language is not a literal interpretation but a more poetic one. She did this by signing a song. I’ve learned a long time ago that it’s your responsibility to educate yourself about others who are culturally different rather than to expect them to translate for you. BRCC Broken Record

On impulse, I searched my blog for all references to BRCC. The search was actually motivated by a desire to see how badly I was trashing my place of employment. As it turns out, not so bad. What I noticed, though, is a broken record rant and so I’ve decided I need to do something about this.

My perpetual rant is a complaint about a particular set of behaviors common to many BRCC students, specifically absenteeism and the failure to turn in work. It’s obvious to me after reviewing my posts that I cannot wrap my brain around this problem. I’ve tried to be proactive about it but my solutions produce epic fails.

Last semester I had a particularly problematic class. (I got barely a 3.0 in my evals from that class, incidentally, my lowest evar). It was so difficult to manage that I even posted on the Read Full Article →

Disclosure in the classroom

Over the past decade, the boundary between personal and public has consistently eroded, an observation made by many. Now that displaying ourselves is de rigeur, thanks especially to Facebook and Twitter, I feel less guilty about doing it on my blog. Personal disclosure was not my original intent, though.

I know in class my students enjoy when I disclose to them. There’s an art to disclosing appropriately in the classroom, one that has taken me years to master. It’s ironic to me that I disclose less and less as the world around me expects more and more. I realized this when I read an article on faculty and Facebook. According to this article, being Facebook friends with your students makes you have more immediacy (i.e., being approachable and accessible) to them. End of the semester blues…

The end of the semester is drawing near and I’m blue about it. I can’t identify why, either. This semester started in such chaos with all the campus changes. Perhaps I’m just drained from it. I hope that I can re-energize after Rome this Christmas (a little under a month away). I hope that I can start the new semester fresh and psyched, unlike this August. I have excellent students this semester, which really carries me through the weekly grind. There are some definite changes I am making next semester, however. So, in random order:

1. I am adding a service learning component to the interpersonal class. There is a new “conversational partners” program on campus to help international students learn English. The Culture of Student Learning at BRCC

Maymester is almost over. I will turn grades in on Monday. I had a great class. The students were very dynamic and engaged. I had only one or two students who struggled with the material. This summer, as last summer, I noticed that the students are stronger. They always seem to be that way during the summer. Several students are not actual BRCC students, but four-year students who are picking up credits during the summer. Even during my experience at universities, summer students always seemed more committed, probably because they are aware that they have to work harder in a compressed time. I am sure I’ve written about this before.

Summer, though, reinforces my confidence that I’m a good teacher and doing things the right way. It’s harder during the school year to feel that. It’s not the workload. I manage that just fine. It’s the student culture at BRCC. [...]

Students’ sense of entitlement

An article about contemporary students’ sense of entitlement is all over the Canadian papers today. It cites a UC Irvine study published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence. The article discusses how entitled today’s students feel. Here are some stats from the article:

The study asked approximately 400 undergraduates aged 18 to 25 whether they agreed with these statements:

If I have explained to my professor that I am trying hard, I think he/she should give me some consideration with respect to my course grade – 66.2 per cent agree
If I have completed most of the reading for a class, I deserve a B in that course – 40.7 per cent
If I have attended most of the classes for a course, I deserve at least a grade of B – 34.1 per cent
Teachers often give me lower grades than I deserve on [...]
