The Lady Doctor

Over Thanksgiving I had a conversation with my mother-in-law about women doctors. She explained that she had to see a woman eye doctor because her regular doctor was unavailable and that this made her uncomfortable. I recognize that some people are uncomfortable with women doctors even today. Comfort with a doctor is an emotional thing, not something you can necessarily address rationally. I expect that with each generation this discomfort will lessen. Still, when I play the very old doctor riddle with my students in class, most can’t solve it. Here’s the riddle:

A man and his son were in a car and had an accident on the highway. The boy was critically injured and rushed to the hospital. Doctors are not allowed to work on their family. After seeing the boy in the emergency room, the doctor said, “I can’t work on this child. He’s my son!”

Some things:

1. I’ve been working on another website. I find when I do that, I tend to disapper because I’m so immersed. Incidentally, the website is mygratitudes.net. There’s nothing up yet but junk and filler, but I’m having fun working away on the site design. I’m enjoying learning more about CSS, WordPress, and HTML. If there were some local classes, I’d probably be interested in taking one. I’d like to learn more about design itself, not just website design. Stuff like layout, typography, and the like. I’ve tried reading up about that sort of thing online, but I don’t really -see- what people are talking about. I think I need someone to tell me and show me.

2. Today I was looking up examples of arguments for pro-choice and pro-life positions to bring to class. I googled “pro-choice+arguments” and got an astounding number of hits that were Christian, anti-choice [...]

Back in the Stirrups Again — My visit to the Gynecologist

Today I visited the gynecologist’s office for my annual exam. The visit reminded me intimately of why I’m a feminist and why feminism is still necessary today. Times have changed since the emergence of the women’s health movement in the 1960s (see Into Our Own Hands by Sandra Morgen) and since I read Mary Daly’s Gyn/ecology years ago and studied the early versions of the Boston Women’s Health Collective’s Our Bodies, Ourselves.

Or, perhaps not.

Setting aside the profoundly political and complex issues of women’s reproductive freedom and the medicalization of women’s bodies and women’s health that remains prevalent in our culture, I can only marvel at how my visit was utterly..well…disheartening.

Institutional racism or acts of meanness?

Recently I’ve been working a lot with the YWCA Dialogue on Race again. The dialogues have frustrated me for as long as I’ve been a participant. I think the process is invaluable and important. Necessary, even. But I also think it is highly problematic – beyond the problems and tensions that /any/ dialogue on race necessarily entails.

First off, the conversations about race that I’ve had with sympathetic people (of all races) in Louisiana are generally very flat. Conversations here don’t broach essentialism and intersectionality or question identity politics. While racism in Louisiana feels much more entrenched and deep-seated than in other places I’ve lived, the general understanding of racism here lacks nuance. Of course, some might say, “what is there to understand?…racism is racism. The people who are suffering under the burden of racism already understand. They’re oppressed. They live it.
