Cut and paste for your troops

On this Veteran’s Day, stop fake support of your troops.

Today is Veteran’s Day, a day that spawns a number of cut and paste micro-memes on Facebook. After last month’s screed on pinkwashing, I feel compelled to repeat my rant pre-emptively as the first posts start to trickle in.

People see the “Support our Troops Cut and Paste” and they dutifully follow directions without taking a moment to honor the sentiment, and without admitting that they’ve accomplished absolutely nothing meaningful in any way.

I find flag waving “support your veteran” statuses on Facebook amusing. They’re pointless. I might as well cut and paste a status from a status generator app (they do exist) – that’s about how interesting and meaningful those memes are.

Let the water hold me down – One Book, One Community

When I was an undergraduate, my friends called me “Apocalyptic Laura” because EVERYTHING was a crisis. I was constantly in crisis mode and my life was filled with drama. I don’t know if it’s age, drugs, or Steve’s influence, but my life is calm and steady now. I suspect it’s all three, actually. But a steady, drama-free life doesn’t leave me much to blog about.

I finally finished reading _Breach of Faith_ (by Jed Horne) for the One Book One Community dialogues that are going on. The man is an amazing writer. His ability to evoke images is impressive. One of the librarians here said in regard to the BRCC book club discussion of the book that most people found the first part of the book compelling but they didn’t like the second part. Thank god people of christian faith are starting to wake up about the War in Iraq. Finally, just as the president’s approval ratings are sinking to historic lows, even the Christian right is turning against the war in Iraq. It reminds me of how neurotic the people at God Camp were about Bush being the annointed president. I wonder how people rationalize this incongruity in their minds. Was God wrong? Is Bush listening to bad advisors? Has Bush fallen from grace? What is the deal? The mental gymnastics that these people must be going through are probably pretty amazing.

Barack Obama might be running on a “move-over boomers” campaign. He’s pitching himself as the next generation of politicians. While it’s a move that I love, being a gen Xer myself, I think it’s a big political mistake. Look what happened to music when the boomers moved over. [...]
