Despite your best efforts, there are always some students who just don’t get it. They don’t come to class, they don’t read, they don’t do their assignments. You do what you can to help them. And then there are those who don’t get it and complain that it’s your fault. My friend Carolyn says it’s our job to help them up until midterm. If, by midterm, they don’t step up to the plate, it’s time for us to let go. I used to collect and post the responses of students who fell into this category. Their emails to me were typically riddled with hilarious errors. And then I would make up a fictional response — the kind of response that Tank Girl would give. Oh, the power I had as Dr. Tank Girl! But, after a disturbing incident where I was asked to remove something from my personal website, even though it was NOT hosted by the university server, I felt that I should no longer post these responses no matter how deeply buried I put them. I did keep the graphic, however. Consider it a middle finger.
