Bizarre Twist on Nigerian Scam

I don’t really know why I’m so fascinated by Nigerian Scams. But I am. I got a bizarre one today. I’m sure it’s been around for a while, but this is the first time I’ve received one like it. It’s the moneygram scam.

John Atkins emailed me (from a gmail account) telling me he’s sending me part of my money via moneygram. He gave me the reference code and the answer to the secret question. (I will share it with you so you have it too. It’s “green.”) Then the email says you can’t contact him at his email account, but if you have questions, write to this AOL account.

This is a very bizarre twist. I mean, do people really fall for this? Yep. For instance, some county treasurer in Michigan actually embezzled money from the county because he fell victim to one of the scams. How stupid [...]

Momentous Blogging Occasion

Writing is difficult for me. This is my 401st blog entry. Made possibly only because I spent an afternoon transferring old blog entries from my archives and journals. But this is still a big deal for me. I have never been good at journaling. I’ve always wanted to be good at it, but it’s never worked out for me. I love to buy journals to write in. I have many beautiful, elegant, -empty- journal books. I also have a stack of journal books with maybe only five or six entries in them.

The most successful journaling I did was when I was trying to work through my writing block. I read a book, The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, about dealing with creative blocks. Like most self-help books, this book comes with a whole array of accompanying workbooks, inspirational CDs, blah blah blah. But, the book came highly recommended, [...]

Random Musings – Liz Phair

Three random musings:

1. I can’t believe it’s been fifteen years since Liz Phair’s “Exile in Guyville.” I’ve been listening to the CD a lot lately for some reason and then FLOW posted a brief commentary on its impact fifteen years later. I really loved this album, but I didn’t find it as much of a feminist anthem as might have. But it’s fifteenth anniversary re-release reminds me that back in ’93 I was busy listening to Indigo Girls and Melissa Ethridge. There was a brief spike in popularity for women musicians in the late 90s with the Lilith Fair crew, but today the scene for me is bleak. Maybe it’s that generation gap, again. So I asked Willow to name for me three contemporary women rockers. Here’s her list: Amy Lee, Avril Lavigne (which she says with a cringe), Hayley Williams (Paramore).

Random Musings – Gen Y Goes to College

There’s a great article in Slate by Michael Agger a couple of weeks ago about how we read on the web. Apparently we don’t really read as much as skim. This is based on interesting research cited in the article. My website doesn’t really fit the guidelines that ‘experts’ advocate in order to retain audiences. There’s also a great article in this month’s the Atlantic Monthly, Is Google Making Us Stupid, which takes a media ecology approach to the web, citing the Phaedrus, McLuhan, and Mumford, among others. The article was a long column, which I had to scroll over, and it didn’t have any bullet points, so I only skimmed it! No, kidding. I read it. Well, this is the second time that I’ve written this post. The electricity has gone out in our house approximately 5 times today. I’m surprised my computer hasn’t gotten fried.

For those of you who are keeping up with my blog (the three or four of you that are left), I have accepted a position at BRCC starting in the Spring. It is a step down from Research I and a step up from being unemployed. As you can see, I still suffer the Research I snobbery without the props to do it. OTOH, I can’t help that I’m so jaded about doing research, though. It’s just not in me. And so much of it is dreck. I’m such a hypocrite. There’s a lesson here for me to learn, I am sure. I also hope that there will be opportunity for professional development.
