Tomorrow is the last day of summer school. This month in the TBR Summer Institute has been intense and intensive.

I had an interesting racialized moment in class yesterday. One of the students, Benjamin, figured out that everyone in class had brown eyes except me. I have green eyes. He asked me why I had green eyes. How do I answer that question? I told him I was magic, just being flippant about it, without really thinking about the implications of what I said. I lost a teachable moment, there. He asked me to magic his eyes and make them green too.

“They are so poor and they are so black”

You simply get chills every time you see these poor individuals, as Jack Cafferty just pointed out, so tragically, so many of these people, almost all of them that we see, are so poor and they are so black, and this is going to raise lots of questions for people who are watching this story unfold.

I’m not sure what specifically Wolf Blitzer was reporting on when he made this comment. I wish I had seen it so that I could see the context of the quote. The quote, however, is being splashed all over the web. Slate has an interesting take on this quote in an article by Jack Shafer about the politics of news reporting during Hurricane Katrina.

Bush on Katrina

George W. Bush gave one of the worst speeches of his life yesterday, especially given the level of national distress and the need for words of consolation and wisdom. In what seems to be a ritual in this administration, the president appeared a day later than he was needed. He then read an address of a quality more appropriate for an Arbor Day celebration: a long laundry list of pounds of ice, generators and blankets delivered to the stricken Gulf Coast. He advised the public that anybody who wanted to help should send cash, grinned, and promised that everything would work out in the end.

We will, of course, endure, and the city of New Orleans must come back. But looking at the pictures on television yesterday of a place abandoned to the forces of flood, fire and looting, it was hard not to [...]

After surfing today, I’ve decided that I’m so far out of the blogging loop that I should rename my blog to “where you at?” — that quaint little Louisiana-ism that actually means “what are you doing?”

Three Dougs are blogging.

Douglas Rushkoff has a blog. I just didn’t know about it.

Doug Kellner has had one for years.

And, so does Douglas Coupland. Ok, not really, but “The Bogus Tribute Blog to Douglas Coupland” is a pretty good read.

Here’s where I’m at today:

I’m the last to know, but here’s a nice organizational chart website from PBS on the media conglomerates: Media Giants. The site is part of Rushkoff’s Merchants of Cool program that was aired a few years ago. It was a great show. I wish I taped it.
