Me and Aaron Henry

In cleaning out my office today I discovered a pair of interesting pictures from my childhood. They are old black and white photos of me when I was probably a year old in the arms of Aaron Henry. Aaron Henry was a famous civil rights leader. My grandmother, who was a district-level politician in New York City at the height of the 60s, hosted Henry in her home. She was very radical, well-known, and well-respected. Yes, being radical is in my genetic code. Here is the text of the note my mother sent me with the pictures:

The occasion of the photographs was a trip Aaron Henry made to NYC to seek support for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party’s admission to the 1964 Democratic National Convention as the legitimate representatives of Mississippi Democrats. I believe at the time he was Chairman of the party.

People from college who I remember

I was ruminating on my college days the other day and I had a flash of thought about people I knew briefly during the drunken haze at UT. These are people who didn’t know me, people I -barely- knew. They were charismatic enough to remember after all these years.

1. Paul Begala. Yes, I knew him when. He didn’t know me. At the time we were at school, there was no student government. The reason is a complicated story not really worth repeating. Paul Begala worked tirelessly to get student government renewed on campus, a campaign that I worked on by collecting signatures. Then, of course, he ran for president. Wikipedia succinctly explains what happened, so I’m cutting and pasting rather than writing it myself, since I’m lazy:

Willow’s Graduation

Saturday was Willow’s graduation. The weekend was very frustrating and emotional for me. Frustrating because there was a lot of waiting around without anything to do, and because we had to pack up Willow’s dorm room. Emotional because…well…she’s graduating. It made me reflect nostalgically on my own high school graduation. It made me feel very old. As did listening to the 80s music at the PALS’ (Parents’ Association of the Louisiana School) graduation party. And also emotional because it means that Willow is leaving the nest. I wasn’t very sympathetic to my family when I left the nest and Willow isn’t very sympathetic to us. I guess what comes around goes around. Willow is so full of potential and possibility. It’s an exciting time. So it was a roller coaster of emotions for me. I expect every parent experiences this or something like it.

Random Musings

Well, this is the second time that I’ve written this post. The electricity has gone out in our house approximately 5 times today. I’m surprised my computer hasn’t gotten fried.

For those of you who are keeping up with my blog (the three or four of you that are left), I have accepted a position at BRCC starting in the Spring. It is a step down from Research I and a step up from being unemployed. As you can see, I still suffer the Research I snobbery without the props to do it. OTOH, I can’t help that I’m so jaded about doing research, though. It’s just not in me. And so much of it is dreck. I’m such a hypocrite. There’s a lesson here for me to learn, I am sure. I also hope that there will be opportunity for professional development.
