There’s a great article in Slate by Michael Agger a couple of weeks ago about how we read on the web. Apparently we don’t really read as much as skim. This is based on interesting research cited in the article. My website doesn’t really fit the guidelines that ‘experts’ advocate in order to retain audiences. There’s also a great article in this month’s the Atlantic Monthly, Is Google Making Us Stupid, which takes a media ecology approach to the web, citing the Phaedrus, McLuhan, and Mumford, among others. The article was a long column, which I had to scroll over, and it didn’t have any bullet points, so I only skimmed it! No, kidding. I read it. Gen-Xer Runs for President

The more I hear about Barack Obama, the more he sounds like a gen Xer to me. This is most probably the effect of selective perception, I admit, but he -is- in his mid-forties. Tody in The American Prospect, Harold Meyerson writes about Obama’s pitch to the DNC, along with Hillary and Edwards. He quotes Obama as expressing concern for the “debasing of the public sphere.” That, of course, hit home for me as a Rhetorical Studies person. It’s interesting that all the typical public address statements about concern for the public sphere revolve on the whole balkanization (from which, admittedly, the Democratic Party does suffer), and now we live in a nearly facist state where the decline of public debate lies at the foot of censorship. Of course, NCA-style rhetoricians are also concerned about free speech and open debate, so I recognize I’m overstating the age gap here. [...]

Thank god people of christian faith are starting to wake up about the War in Iraq. Finally, just as the president’s approval ratings are sinking to historic lows, even the Christian right is turning against the war in Iraq. It reminds me of how neurotic the people at God Camp were about Bush being the annointed president. I wonder how people rationalize this incongruity in their minds. Was God wrong? Is Bush listening to bad advisors? Has Bush fallen from grace? What is the deal? The mental gymnastics that these people must be going through are probably pretty amazing.

Barack Obama might be running on a “move-over boomers” campaign. He’s pitching himself as the next generation of politicians. While it’s a move that I love, being a gen Xer myself, I think it’s a big political mistake. Look what happened to music when the boomers moved over. [...]

Barack Hussein Obama — the Fickle Adulation of the Media

Senator Barack Obama has been a media darling at least since August. And the right is already starting its smear campaign against him. Much has been made of his middle name, “Hussein.” (See Wonkette) I saw him on C-SPAN addressing voters in New Hampshire, where the press asked him if his middle name would be a problem in a presidential campaign. His response was pretty savvy, I thought. He said something to the effect of “Anyone who sees my name as a strike against me already has so many other strikes against me that it’s a moot point.” (No, this is not an exact quote.) He’s good at turning words around like that.

Post-Birthday Gushing and Ranting

My husband seriously rocks. Ruth’s Chris? Excellent. They cook their steaks in butter. Calorie count? Food for a week for a family of New Millennial beggars in Lagos, Nigeria (if you don’t understand that joke, it’s because you don’t realize blogs are daily-ish, so read back a few days). Seriously. Most important, though? MY PRESENT! AN ENGAGEMENT RING! I was shocked to silence (I’m never quite). Steve and I eloped to Las Vegas, see. I never got an engagement ring, see. I have a great wedding ring story, but that’s for another time. So, OMG, IT’S FUCKING HUGE. The engagement ring, that is, see.
