Early New Year resolutions

Even though I’m exactly three weeks early, I’m declaring my resolutions today. It’s never to soon to get started on positive changes in your life, right?

In no particular order:

1. I resolve to be a better friend. There are so many friendships I have let slip away. Drfit is a natural thing in friendships, of course, but I seem to be quite good at letting people disappear for no real reason other than friendship laziness. Facebook has made this point abundantly clear to me by bringing people back into my life. Still, all I do is click on the lick button or drop a comment. I’m not good at calling people, sending emails, or much of anything else. This is something I will try to change. Christmas cards, however, are still pretty much out.

The Kindle and “Picard’s Syndrome”

Due to my recent tech splurge, I’m now the owner of a brand new Amazon Kindle, acquired just before Thanksgiving. I’m quite happy with it. Reviews all over the net are fairly accurate. I like the weight, the screen’s readability, the size, the forward and backward buttons. I don’t like the five-way toggle button and the lack of lighting to read in the dark. I don’t care about not having a touch screen since I despise fingerprints and smudges in almost OCD proportions. I found a cute Vera Bradley bag that fits the Kindle perfectly. I’m happy. The drawbacks and the politics of DRM management and not actually “owning” the intellectual property found in books have been discussed extensively elsewhere; there’s no point in reiterating them here. What I would like to talk about, however, is the utterly tactile experience of the Kindle.

New Tech Toys

I’m posting from my new Motorola Droid. It’s frustratingly wonderful. Or wonderfully frustrating. The WordPress app seems to be working well and I’m getting the hang of the keyboard. Immersion seems to be the key for me. I typically type 125-150 words per minute, not as fast as I think of course, but fast enough that I don’t get frustrated. Blogging on Droid is painfully slow. It is helping me improve my texting skills. I am a latecomer to that game. But I saw some iPhone commercials and decided to give up my granny phone and enter the new century.

What I saw in particular was an ad for an augmented reality app. You hold up your phone to a street sign and it tells you where you are (useful if you are lost in a new city), what’s around you, and how to get where you’re going. At first [...]

Whoopi and Disney

I adore Whoopi. Ever since I saw her Direct From Broadway show on HBO many years ago. I haven’t seen the 2oth anniversary version, though I would really like to. In the orignal HBO special, her character Fontaine, who is a junkie, goes to the Anne Frank house. It is a profound piece about race and humanity that I wish I could see again.

I was excited to see Whoopi join The View, which is one of my favorite shows to watch when I’m not really watching TV. I was terribly disappointed in her “rape rape” comment about Roman Polanski, for which she’s being skewered all over the net, and deservedly so. Still, I think she’s got an incredible talent for raising people’s consciousness through comedy.
