New Tech Toys

I’m posting from my new Motorola Droid. It’s frustratingly wonderful. Or wonderfully frustrating. The WordPress app seems to be working well and I’m getting the hang of the keyboard. Immersion seems to be the key for me. I typically type 125-150 words per minute, not as fast as I think of course, but fast enough that I don’t get frustrated. Blogging on Droid is painfully slow. It is helping me improve my texting skills. I am a latecomer to that game. But I saw some iPhone commercials and decided to give up my granny phone and enter the new century.

What I saw in particular was an ad for an augmented reality app. You hold up your phone to a street sign and it tells you where you are (useful if you are lost in a new city), what’s around you, and how to get where you’re going. At first [...]

Whoopi and Disney

I adore Whoopi. Ever since I saw her Direct From Broadway show on HBO many years ago. I haven’t seen the 2oth anniversary version, though I would really like to. In the orignal HBO special, her character Fontaine, who is a junkie, goes to the Anne Frank house. It is a profound piece about race and humanity that I wish I could see again.

I was excited to see Whoopi join The View, which is one of my favorite shows to watch when I’m not really watching TV. I was terribly disappointed in her “rape rape” comment about Roman Polanski, for which she’s being skewered all over the net, and deservedly so. Still, I think she’s got an incredible talent for raising people’s consciousness through comedy.

Personal lists

I am behind on…

1. Grading. SO MUCH GRADING. And it’s not even the crunch time yet.

2. Cleaning. I never finished my 40 steps/40 days summer goal of cleaning my office. I have piles of crap all over the place and everything I dusted now has layers of dust again. Depressing.

3. Reading. My “to be read” pile is huge.

4. Health care. I need a dentist’s appointment and a dermatology appointment. I’ve needed a dentalappointment for months now.

5. lolcats. I’ve caught up on lolcats, goggies, lookalikes, and punditkitchen. I’m behind on Engrish and Failblog. Can’t catch up. At all. I’m trying, though, which shows my priorities are straight.

6. Dollhouse (thereby contributing to its cancellation).

Things coming up that scare me…

1. Final grades. (No brainer.)

2. Getting ready for Rome. So much to do!

Suzuki Beane

When I was a child, my nickname was Binie. This is a huge confession on my part. Still, the net has become everyone’s confessional, so I have permission to do so. Binie was short for my middle name, which I will in no way repeat out loud to any living soul. In addition, according to family stories, I somewhat resembled the character “Suzuki Beane” (1961). Apparently, I wore jeans with the cuffs turned up and I had an attitude somewhat similar to hers. So the nickname stuck. Suzuki Beane, who lived on Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village, was the child of hipster parents. She befriended a square named Henry and the two of them ditched school to adventure far and wide through New York City. It’s a charming book. Huffington Post and right wing blowhards

I do not understand the Huffington Post. The site contains story after story about Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Sarah Palin. Sometimes other people are added to the mix — all the usual suspects. To be fair, they add balance with Jon Stewart, Michael Moore, and Arianna herself. On the whole, though, that site is obsessed with right wing bloviation. This obsessive coverage just gives the blowhards more limelight, more attention, more power. It’s like feeding trolls.

Sarah Palin is now promoting her book, which means she’s making the media circuit. Ultimately this translates to more Palin for us to look forward to on HuffPo. They will document every stop she makes on her trail from Oprah to Good Morning Peoria. If she truly is as vapid as the leftwing blogosphere claims, then why the hell do we give her more than two words of acknowlegement? I mean, it’s pathetically [...]
