hey Laura! just want to chime in to say that the average physician really isn't (oddly enough) generally as informed about general nutrition and basic personal training as one would think they are/should be . the good ones admit to this and advise their patients to see a nutritionist and to get a personal trainer. sounds to me like Chris is giving great advice regarding the exercise and calorie intake. once you have developed a certain level of fitness you really have to increase the intensity as well as the duration to see additional benefits. sheesh, i could walk slowly for hours and not burn as many calories or improve my cardiovascular health as much as in 40-60 minutes of running...even the surgeon general's guidelines from almost 15 years ago are clear about that. besides, so what if it takes you a little longer to take the weight off? following Chris's advice means that you will *keep* it off.

hang in there!

Really? The Ohio State? Blech. Though I guess it's different being an undergrad than a grad student there. And it depends on what she wants out of college life. Still.

If she does decide to go there, something worth keeping in mind: the student neighborhoods near campus are not safe. Dorms are ok, I think, but if/when she moves off campus she should be careful about where she moves. (I sound very fuddy-duddy at the moment but I swear it's true.)
