Starting at BRCC

After two days of orientation at , I’m feeling pretty good about working there. The environment seems very friendly, collegial, and pro-active. They are doing some exciting programs. The administration seems very approachable. There are a couple of pain in the ass problems, though. For some rooms, you have to go to the library to check out a remote control in order to use the dvd/vcr. Not that the library is that far away, but it does mean planning ahead of time. All copying is done through the copyshop at the union. Again, not so much a hassle as it means planning ahead of time. I’m usually a one day at a time sort of teacher. I am going to have to train myself out of that. I have big stretches of time in between classes, more than I need for the ten hours a week of office hours. I am hoping that I can get all my work accomplished during office hours so I don’t have to bring work home. I teach at 7:30 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the building where my office is is locked, so I will need to bring home things the day before. Again, it’s not such a big deal. But there’s a small accumulation of hassles. Not major ones, just ones that mean I need to retrain myself and how I do things.

On the flip side, the buildings are all new, the technology is available, and everyone is very friendly and welcoming.

I’m anxiously looking forward to getting into the classroom.
