After the money’s gone – Microsoft Money in heavy rotation

I can’t believe how much money has become a part of my life.

Now, I know that’s a strange statement and it needs clarification, since money is a part of -everyone’s- life here in the 21st c. US — whether it’s money or lack thereof.

Growing up poor white trash meant that money, as in the lack thereof, dominated my life. Being one of the “have nots” threaded so essentially through the fabric of everything I did, that I can still smell what being poor smells like, even today as a “have.” It smells like someone else’s old clothes, old rags used to stop up gasoline tanks on old pickup trucks, dirty threadbare towels.

101 things to do with cling peaches

A long time ago (1982 to be precise), I saw “The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball,” which had a hysterical standup comic doing a spiel on “101 things to do with cling peaches.” I should rent that video sometime, if I can get a hold of it. I remember laughing so hard that I spewed my coke.

What made me think of the routine is PEACH SEASON — yay –. Steve has been bringing home peaches and nectarines and they are wonderful. July is the peak harvesting season for peaches and nectarines. So, I had a conversation the other day with Steve about the difference between peaches and nectarines. The obvious difference is the skin: peaches are fuzzy and nectarines are smooth. Into the Blogosphere by Laura Gurak

Into the Blogosphere is Laura Gurak’s new edited collection on Blogs. The subtitle is Rhetoric, Culture, and the Community of Weblogs.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda, but I didn’t think it would stack up on a tenure review. Of course if I did more, it wouldn’t matter, right? Lesson to self: “Do more so you can do what you want.”

In any event, I want to update my own miniscule collection of links on blogging. When blogging first started and I first started tracking it, there was really very little written about it except to point to it as a new phenomenon. Now, well, there’s volumes. The Blogosphere book looks like some delicious surfing material.

From there I hopped Scholars Who Blog in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

CD Obsolescence

CDs are obsolete. By the time I got my first CD player and my first CD, back in 1985, CDs were already obsolete. Now, if you think about that, that’s just about the dumbest lie ever. But in 1985, the third generation of CD players were on the market and CD-ROM drives were released. From there, it’s a downhill slide to Napster and Kazaa and DVDs. It’s like, inevitable, teleological.

My computer is in the shop. I’m getting a DVD write drive installed. I’m so behind.

I’m moving offices from one room to the other at home…moving into the bigger bedroom, right? And so tonite I’m throwing out my CD player. It’s old. Crappy. Still works. But crappy.

Christmas Album Collection

I’m moving my office into one of the larger bedrooms in the house. What a fucking mess. My computer crashed. It sucks to be without it over July 4th weekend. I hooked up my monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the laptop, so I’m semi-functional. I might not get my tower back for another six days. Feh.

In the process of moving things, I realized that a good chunk of my CDs have migrated from the bedroom into my study, which makes perfect sense since I actually -listen- to them in the study. I also realized that we have amassed a nice little collection of Christmas music. Some of it is from roadside gas stations bought on roadtrips over Christmas break. We took the entire collection with us on our fifth anniversary pilgrimage to Las Vegas last year.
