Christmas Album Collection

I’m moving my office into one of the larger bedrooms in the house. What a fucking mess. My computer crashed. It sucks to be without it over July 4th weekend. I hooked up my monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the laptop, so I’m semi-functional. I might not get my tower back for another six days. Feh.

In the process of moving things, I realized that a good chunk of my CDs have migrated from the bedroom into my study, which makes perfect sense since I actually -listen- to them in the study. I also realized that we have amassed a nice little collection of Christmas music. Some of it is from roadside gas stations bought on roadtrips over Christmas break. We took the entire collection with us on our fifth anniversary pilgrimage to Las Vegas last year.

Here’s the list:

_Beauty and the Beast

The Disney Soundtrack. I don’t know why this CD symbolizes Christmas for me. It just does. I listen to it every Christmas. The other meaning it has for me is Willow’s going to school. Get up get up and go to school. I used to play this for her in the morning before I drove her to nursery school. When she came to stay with us and went to school in sixth grade, I played it for her then, too. A couple of years ago Steve took me to see the roadshow version in New Orleans for Christmas. So, somehow I think that was planned. Synchronicity!

_KZONE Collectibles Vol 6, ‘98_

KZON, a radio station in Phoenix, annually puts together a compilation disk of acoustic songs by musicians that come visit them in the studio and play on the air. The compilation is great. I wish I could get a volume every year, but I can’t find them. Anyway Vol. 6 has an acoustic version of Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be,” which is my and Steve’s “song.” It’s our song mostly because we heard it on the way to getting married in Las Vegas. There was a big wreck on the two-lane highway. It was a horrible fatal accident. It was the middle of the night. The stars were beautiful. The weather was crisp. We were in the desert. We were standing on the side of the road watching the stars and this song came on. It was a bitter sweet moment. Very bitter sweet. I think we both felt horrible that we were having the moment at the expense of some people’s lives. But we were on our way to get married in Vegas. It was one of those life comes full circle moments that you never forget and that makes you value what you have.

The Real Stuff_A Winter’s Solstice_

When I bought this, in 1985, it was one of my very first ever CDs. I was all into this New Age Music kick and especially into getting New Age Music on CD because it sounded soooo beautiful. I didn’t think CDs were going to last. I thought they would be a trend. Ha! Now, A Winter’s Solstice is the only New Age music I listen to. It’s one of my favorite Christmas rituals. I love popping it into the player on road trips. Driving in upstate New York in the snow with these on the player….. it doesn’t get any more Christmas than that.

_A Winter’s Solstice II_

_A Winter’s Solstice IV_

_A Winter’s Solstice Silver Anniversary Edition_

_Holiday Songs and Lullabies_

Shawn Colvin. Beautiful stuff. I love it.

_Tchaikovsky’s _Nutcracker Ballet_

’nuff said.

_Mannheim Steamroller Christmas_

Steve and his mom actually like the same music!

_Little Drummer Boy_

“Great Christmas Classics”; includes Rosemary Clooney and Gene Autry! Definitely a RGSP, or, roadside gas station purchase

_Christmas in the King’s Court: Celtic Harp and Pan Flute_

Since this was made in Nashville, TN, I’m fairly certain it’s also an RGSP.

_1960s Christmas_

This is a Warner CD so I think it’s from Walmart. We’re talking Beach Boys, Brenda Lee, Bobby Darin, and my fave, (Ike and) Tina Turner’s Merry Christmas Baby.
