Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack
I decided that I didn’t like the way that Julia Wood is handling race in her textbook for Gender and Comm. Actually, well, I decided that years ago. So I’m asking the students to read Peggy MacIntosh’s article, “White Privilege.” It’s very old, but still useful. I surfed and found some links to the text and, so, here they are:
White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack — A much abbreviated form that is somewhat depoliticized and that is probably more palatable for general audiences.
Here’s a better excerpt from Vanderbilt and the one I used in class.
Another useful site: WMST-L’s discussion list archive on the article.
If you want the whole paper, you can buy it from Wellesley.
Then, I found a cool site on 10 codes for the ethics of being white in hip hop. They are old standards, but cool nonetheless.
